KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

Our guests are collected early – approximately 5.30 am, so that we can get to the park as the gates open. (This gives us the chance to see nocturnal animals before they rest up for the day.)

Our small group tours are led by highly experienced and qualified guides in air conditioned minibuses, with big windows, comfy seats and which are easy to get in and out of.

Our tour cost includes conservation/entrance fees, early morning tea/coffee and rusks, a light lunch, use of binoculars and a great library.  You will have a great tour and learn a lot.

PANORAMA ROUTE (scenery and early gold mining)

We collect our guests at approximately 8.30 am and set off through a landscape of Pine and Eucalyptus man made forests to the town of Sabie, where we visit the LONE CREEK WATERFALL. We have easy access to the 68 metre high falls on a paved walkway.

Those interested in geology will be fascinated by the sedimentary rock formation, going back billions of years to the Gowandaland  period.

After visiting the falls we travel to Pilgrims Rest, a gold mining town of the 1870’s (the whole town has been declared a national monument). 

We visit, among other historic buildings and museums, the Royal Hotel pub- which was once a church!  With all this excitement, we have earned a cup of tea (own account).  After tea, we visit the local graveyard to see the Robber's Grave and pay respect to so many Welsh, English, Scottish and other miners who died in their quest for gold.

The Old Trafford sports ground and a replica shop of the period finish off our visit to this little town. 

Our drive to GRASKOP takes approximately 40 minutes.  This town has excellent curio shops, a silk factory shop and a shop selling elephant dung paper etc.  Here our guests are introduced to biltong – a South African delicacy, and have lunch at one of the local restaurants (included in the tour)

In the afternoon, we visit some magnificent view sites which include Pinnacle Rock, God’s Window, Lisbon Falls, Bourkes Luck Potholes (the potholes were formed over millions of years by rocks suspended in the swirling water caused by two converging rivers).

It is a short drive to the Three Rondawels – one of South Africa’s most famous view sites.

After a full day of exercise and fresh air, we make our way ‘home’.

ELEPHANT INTERACTION (short ride and lunch)

CHIMP EDEN (Jane Goodall) / BARBERTON

We collect our guests at approximately 8.30 am to travel to the world famous Jane Goodall Chimpanzee Eden.  Even though chimpanzees are not one of South Africa’s 5 primates, they are native to Africa.

The chimps at Chimpanzee Eden are being rehabilitated from a bad situation and enjoy sanctuary in a forest at the heart of Umhloti Nature Reserve (we enjoy a close-up encounter (no touching) with the chimps on an informative guided tour in the interpretation centre. 

After tea (own a/c) we continue our tour by traveling to the historic gold mining town of Barberton.

BARBERTON – home of the Barberton Daisy and Stromatolites”, the remnants of blue-green algae formed 3.5 billion years ago, when oxygen was added to the planet’s atmosphere.

During the 1870’s and 1880’s South Africa was in the throes of a gold rush with Barberton having some of the richest deposits at that time

We start our tour of Barberton by visiting the museum which gives us an insight into geology, the early stone age people, the gold rush , concentration camps of the Anglo Boer War and much more.

After lunch (included in tour price), we set out on an historical town tour which includes visits to two fine Victorian homes, both of which have been restored and furnished to their former glory.  We learn about COCKNEY LIZ, JOCK OF THE BUSHVELD and other colourful characters of this gold rush town.  We have a chance to see the early rock samples and have a cup of tea before meeting our guide to try our hand at GOLD PANNING (if a guide is available).

ART ROUTE WHITE RIVER AREA

Many of South Africa’s foremost artists live and work in the White River/Nelspruit area.

Our tour could start by a visit to a glassblower, taxidermist or a furniture factory where local wood or even railway sleepers are used. 

The morning part of the tour includes a visit to the famous Bosch family.  We visit the studios of Elias, his daughter Esra, and son Anton Bosch.  All 3 have studios and showrooms and their artwork, pottery and ceramics are sold and dispatched worldwide. 

After tea, we visit CASTERBRIDGE FARM. 

Casterbridge Farm is where so many artists have their studios and showrooms.  From knife makers, candle makers, choclatiers – they have them all.  Perhaps a cotton dressing gown as favoured by Nelson Mandela, or British Royalty might catch your eye!

The motor museum and art gallery featuring local artists might interest you or perhaps a glass of ORANGE WINE at ROTTCHER WINERIES might be your fancy. 

During all this activity we will find time to have lunch at one of the fine restaurants.

Certainly a great day will be had by all.

LUNCH is taken at the Costa Do Sol Restaurant which is reputed to have the best seafood in Maputo (included in tour price) – drinks for your own account.  After lunch we travel the beach road past the yacht club to Maputo Harbour where we take a ferry across Maputo Bay to Catembe.  The return ferry trip offers us the opportunity to mix with the locals and take in the Maputo skyline.
A full day but a great chance to experience life of this once Portuguese Colony.
